More X Files Commentary
The sequel story, what comes after Smoking Man’s death, should totally be the continuation of this pair of episodes i’m watching, where Scully finds out that her genetic child is out there and needs her help, the result of her abduction. She could comb clinic records to avenge herself and the other women who were abducted, much like Mulder used the X Files to try to understand what...
Alternate Titles
The SXSW people suggested that my proposal (“The Fine Line Between Creepy and Fun”) might fare better during panel-picker madness if the title more specifically referenced the subject area, social software. So I asked Twitter for new title suggestions.

I just finished season 5 episode 2, which is as far as I can tell basically the end of the story. I’m confused that they would do this at the start of a new season, but there are a lot of things about the pacing that seem odd.
Why is this the end? They just wrapped up three primary storylines: Smoking man’s conspiracy (or his personal involvement, at least), Scully’s abduction...
I discovered an interesting Rails bug/gotcha today. If you write something like:
class CatOwner < ActiveRecord::Base
belongs_to :cat
named_scope :cats, :joins => :cats, :select => “distinct cats.*”
end
then you will get a collection of fake CatOwner objects containing Cat data (ids and any attributes with the same name). Which kind of makes sense,...
Addie reblogging this quote about acknowledging gender as performance means you can make fun of it reminds me—I think this is part of what works so well about the Old Spice YouTube campaign. They’re making an absurdist performance of masculinity, taking it to extremes. I mean, think about this: he’s standing around in a bathroom all day, in a towel, talking to the camera. Being...
Representation and Reality
I’ve been thinking about M.I.A.’s music in the context of rap, gangsta rap in particular. People criticize M.I.A. for pushing a violent 3rd world revolutionary persona while living a posh L.A. lifestyle, but gangsta rap promoted the brutality of gang life to white suburbanites. So I don’t know if there’s anything different (or worse) about her letting us imagine we’re...
