“When a reporter asked, ‘What can sex workers do to prevent violence?’ I said, ‘Well, maybe people could not kill us.’ On the one hand, we do precautions; on the other hand, we can’t take responsibility for the way the world works.” —Getting Away With Murder on Long Island

“Somewhere along the road to equality, young women like us lost their voices. So when we marched into the workforce and the fog of subtle gender discrimination, it was baffling and alien. Without a movement behind us, we had neither the language to describe it nor the confidence to call it what it was.” —Young Women, Newsweek, and Sexism - Newsweek

Places I ate while in SF for WhereCamp

Old Ironsides Cafe in Sunnyvale (by far the least interesting meal I had on this trip)

Red Rock Coffee in Mountain View (comfy place to eat, drink, work)

Epi in Palo Alto (mmm grilled cheese and fries)

Squat and Gobble in the Haight (yum crepes)

Suzu Noodle House in Japantown (fairly average, but in a good way)

Suppenkuche in Hayes Valley (beer! spaetzle! I totally want to go back here)

Ritual Coffee Roasters in the Mission (it was late. there was wifi and cocoa.)

Copenhagen Bakery in Burlingame (Reid went here once with his parents)

WhereCamp at Stanford (we all know catering lock-ins suck, but the food was pretty decent and the company was good)

Antonio’s Nuthouse in Palo Alto (didn’t eat here, just beer. the front area reminded me of something that would be attached to a rollerskating rink.)

Koma Sushi in Menlo Park (just okay)

La Victoria in the Mission (a lovely neighborhood panderia)

Troya in Inner Richmond (Turkish food, very delicious. I had been walking around a ton and it was a late lunch and I was starving, and this was perfect.)

Balompie Cafe in the Mission (pupusas!!!)

“This topic makes me feel positively Marxist: we’re willingly participating in a system designed and perpetuated to exploit us because to do otherwise would be impolite.” —Hacker News | The Programmer Salary Taboo

“We’ve changed the way we think of ourselves as citizens. We don’t think of ourselves as citizens in the old sense of being small parts of something larger and infinitely more important to which we have serious responsibilities. We do still think of ourselves as citizens in the sense of being beneficiaries—we’re actually conscious of our rights as American citizens and the nation’s responsibilities to us and ensuring we get our share of the American pie. We think of ourselves now as eaters of the pie instead of makers of the pie. So who makes the pie?” —Inside David Foster Wallace’s Private Self-Help Library | The Awl
